Montego gets a second chance-
Barefoot to Natural Balance Shoes
This is the story of a gelding that stole my heart and opened my
eyes. These first films were presented to me over a year ago
(2009) and represent his deteriorating condition from chronic
founder. He had been trimmed by a certified barefoot trimmer for
well over a year before I was called...
The films were taken 9-18-08-when I began trimming Montego, his right front healing angle, or length from the
coronet to the ground at the angle of t P3 was 2 1/4 inches. This was the same on the left front, but it was not as
steep. The left front DID heal, and become more sound, but the right front has compromised circulation and only
the heel manages to grow, at the alarming rate of 1.5 inches every 5 weeks...

The hooves are imbalanced, flared,
and have POOR CONNECTION as
well as visible holes through the sole.
The stress placed upon the extensor
tendon is clearly visible as well..
6 months later, the left front has been rebalanced and the hoof is growing
in more connected, the flare is slowly being removed and he is bearing
weight better. This hoof eventually heals and aesthetically appears normal
in form and function, but the right front is much more compromised. He
continued to limp, forced to bear weight on the sole alone, while he
abscessed/prolapsed the coronet, as well as the leg, while the toxins found
their way out of his system. I was dedicated to the healing powers of
nature, but I acknowledged that this was not nature's doing...it was man's.
He was rescued in this condition because of man's ignorance, but it was a
man's patience and persistence that changed Montego's life for the better.
His words reminded me of a quote from Robert M. Persig that states,
"You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence
in...when people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or
any other kind of dogma or goals, it's always because these Dogmas or
Goals are in doubt." After three years of barefoot, Montego remained
lame on the right front, so it was decided that a Natural Balance Shoe
would be necessary to offer protection to the sole of this deformed hoof.
The deformity made the use of boots impossible, but the NBS would
provide support to the bony column, as well as to the toe area where the
wall had failed to reach the ground. I came to believe that it is our duty, our
responsibility, to offer each individual equine the best possible treatment
that is available; after all, isn't three years of suffering long enough?
